The lapse of time and rivers is the same
Both spend their journey with a restless stream
The silent pace with which they steal away
No wealth can bribe, no prayers persuade to stay.
Alike irrevocable both when past
And a wide ocean swallows both at last.
Though each resemble each in every part,
A difference at length strikes the musing heart;
Streams never flow in vain:where streams abound,
How laughs the land with various plenty crowned!
But time, that should enrich the nobler mind
Neglected, leaves the weary waste behind.
William Cowper

ReplyDeleteyou forgot to de-italicize for you own comments...
why do you like this poem?
yeah. i am not so tech savvy like you zac, my computer wouldn't let me figure out how to de-italisize. : )
ReplyDeletei like this poem because it makes me think, think and because it makes a connection for me. i mean we all understand time, but when you put it together with water, the meaning just stands out to me more. it's bringing the bananas to my tree. : ) hah.
