12/8/11-A Prophet Without Honor

Today’s Bible reading comes from the book of Mark. Chapter 6. Jesus goes back to his hometown to do some good work. And honestly, everyone was pretty blown away by what he had to say. That is, until they realized that he was the punk kid of the local carpenter trying to pass himself off as a prophet. He could only do a very few healings because of their amazing lack of faith.
How utterly wretched. So let’s move the timeline a little bit. America. We all know Jesus. We “know” Jesus so well that we have almost completely stopped listening to every person who, in casual conversation, happens to mention his name. We roll our eyes at the radio broadcasts and televangelists. And he’s lucky if we go to church to “learn” about him. If that’s why we’re going. We are over-Jesussed. And if we’re judging by fruits of the spirit, America has no faith. God is not moving with the vast majority of us because we have suffocated him and “overknown” him. Miracles are rare, prophesies are scoffed, and the work of the Holy Spirit is simply unheard of.
However, when missionaries take their love of the Lord to other countries, crazy stuff happens! You know why? Because they have a beautiful opportunity to experience God without all the social hype about Christianity. They have no predisposition. How beautiful. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to read the Bible yourself, without having ever been taught about it?
